Lotto jackpots to new $90m record, by Marissa Calligeros and Georgina Robinson - Fairfax - 24th June 2009

Oz 7 Lotto has reached an all-time Australian record, jackpotting to a whopping $90 million after there were no first division winners in last night's draw.

Australians spent $87 million on a one-in-45 million chance to bag last night's jackpot, which pushed the first prize up from $50 million to $59 million.

"We were going to go to $60 million next week if it jackpotted but due to the unprecedented level of interest in last night's draw, the decision has been made to offer a minimum guaranteed jackpot level of $90 million," Tattersalls spokeswoman Karen Anning said.

Before yesterday, the record jackpot for an Australian lottery was $50 million.

While there were no division one winners in last night's draw, 32 Australians scored the $26,376.35 division two prize.

Four Queenslanders, from Brisbane, Hendra, Cairns and Port Douglas, were among the division two winners.

The $3,705.20 division three prize was scored by 469, while close to 3000 players picked up a handy $304.

At Inala Plaza News, where a record seven division one winning tickets have been sold in the past, Tamara Bowe said the afternoon rush was a "complete frenzy".

Lotto hopefuls queued out the door waiting to secure their chance in the record draw.

"It was a complete frenzy, absolute madhouse," Ms Bowe said.

"So much for a recession. People were certainly happy to spend their money yesterday.

"We were flat out all day and then when people started getting off work in the afternoon things turned to a complete frenzy," Ms Bowe said.

That's not to say Ms Bowe and her staff didn't have their hands in the mix.

"Oh yes, of course we bought tickets...quite a few actually."

The team at Inala News are planning to do it all again next Tuesday, when the draw jackpots again.

The Australian Lotto Bloc will today announce the final amount of next week's Oz 7 Lotto.
